Mentoring Others

Mentoring can be a valuable professional development experience for both the mentor and the person being mentored. For a student who is visually impaired and interested in becoming a teacher, especially, finding a mentor who also has a visaul impairment can be difficult. It is important for experienced teachers with visual impairments to connect with those new to the field so that no one has to re-invent the wheel when it comes to coming up with accommodations. Some good ways of getting involved as a mentor include:

  • Connect with some local teachers of students with visual impairments (TVIs) in case they have recent graduates or older high school students interested in going into teaching
  • Connect with regional or national blindness consumer groups; many of these groups have subdivisions dedicated to certain professions or other means, such as listservs, for memebers to connect informally
  • By putting your name in a mentor database such as that hosted by AFB's CareerConnect enables those looking for mentors to search by career and find blind or visually impaired people working in their field of interest
