WelcomeThis website is designed to provide information and support to teachers who are blind or have low vision. If you are a teacher experiencing vision loss, or if you are a blind person who is thinking about a career as a teacher, you will find information on this site that may be helpful. We believe that individuals who are blind or visually impaired can be creative, effective teachers. Further, we believe that teachers with visual impairments have a unique opportunity to provide real-life experiences for students related to diversity and accommodations. Our experiences have shown us that teachers who are blind or visually impaired have valuable contributions to make to education but also face some significant challenges as they negotiate through the day-to-day activities of teaching and working in a school environment. In addition, there are often challenges related to the understanding and acceptance of accommodations for teachers with visual impairments on the part of parents, colleagues and administrators. This website, therefore, contains some basic information about becoming a teacher and adjusting to teaching with a visual impairment. Both general information and specific suggestions are included in these pages. We encourage you to use this information and share with others who may find this site helpful. We would appreciate hearing from you for any additional suggestions you may have that would contribute additional ideas for people with vision loss interested in the teaching profession. |
