Deciding to Be a Teacher 

Many young people consider teaching as a possible career path, and those who are blind or visually impaired are no exception. In order to decide if you want to be a teacher, and if your talents match the requirements of being a teacher, we believe that it is important for you to understand what it means to teach.  Just being a student and watching teachers is not enough! You should spend some time discovering what it means to be a teacher.

This section of the website contains information on four topics:

  • Analyzing Your Skills and Personality: It will be important for you to pay attention to your own personal skills and talents and how you may fit in the teaching profession.  This section will help you begin to examine your own skills and personality in the light of those required of a teacher.
  • Finding Out About Being a Teacher: Becoming a teacher is a very important decision and the more you know about being a teacher, the more informed you will be as you make this decision.
  • Exploring Different Types of Teaching: We use the term "teacher" to refer to the wide range of professional involved in education.  You will want to find out which type of teacher you will want to be.  This section of the website will help you narrow down your thoughts by providing basic information on a variety of teaching subspecialties.
  • Volunteering in Classrooms: This part of the website will highlight the importance of using volunteering as a way to help you make your decision about becoming a teacher.

Deciding to be a teacher should not be done lightly.  Teaching is an important job and teachers should be our most talented and creative people.
